Workington Provide First English Opposition for Ayr

Ayr United’s travelled to West Cumbria for a mid season (mid-December) trip to play Workington. Despite a brace from United’s ace striker Jimmy Smith, United’s first experience of English football ended in a 4-2 defeat for the Honestmen on 10th March 1928.

When Ayr United decided to take a few days away from 2nd division duty on 17th December 1957 they didn’t pick any sun drenched location that some may have wished for.

Instead Ayr United headed off to to Workington once again to play a friendly. This time, however, the Honestmen earned a 1-1 draw fpr their efforts.

It appears that a programme for the match was produced for the 1957 match.
