Hard Times Against Thirds
Ayr United’s first ever meeting with Third Lanark occurred on 13th December 1913 at Cathkin Park, Glasgow when the ‘Hi Hi’ won by 4-2 in a first division match. The return match at Somerset Park on 24th January 1914 saw G.S Ramsay arrest a bad run by scoring twice in a 2-0 win.
The clubs played a friendy at Somerset Park on 28th February 1914 with the Honest Men enjoying a 3-0 win.
The following season turned out as well for Ayr with a 2-1 defeat at Cathkin Park on 24th October 1914 and a 1-0 win in the home match on 2nd January 1915.
The following season United enjoyed a 6-0 victory over the Hi Hi on 25th March 1916 having drawn 1-1 in Glasgow on 30th October 1915. The Glasgow team however took a 1-0 win Somerset Park in the first division match on 19th August 1916 and completed the double with a closely fought 4-3 win over Ayr on 31st March 1917. Season 1917/18 saw two draws, 1-1 at Cathkin Park on 15th September 1917 and 2-2 at Ayr on 2nd February 1918.
A 5-1 win was obtained by Ayr on 27th April 1921 at Somerset Park although they had los 3-1 at Cathkin earlier in the season. Each had 2-0 wins at home the following season, 3-0 wins each a season later and two 0-0 draws on the next year wen both clubs ound themselves relegated. 0-0 draws prevailed in Division Two although Thirds ran up 5-1 winners in the Division Two match on 5th January 1927. With Division Two football being experienced the following season Ayr had a superb 6-2 win on 5th November 1927 as both teams made their way back to the First Division.
Thirds won by 2-0 on 25th August 1931 in a 1st division encounter and they completed the double with a 4-3 win at Ayr on 8th November 1931. United didn’t fair any better the following season with the ‘Hi Hi’ winning by 5-1 on 19th November 1932 in Glasgow although Ayr did manage a 1-0 win at home on 25th March 1933.
Ayr United, however, had a superb 7-3 victory at Cathkin Park on 22nd August 1933 and rounded it off with a cracking 5-1 win at Ayr on 4th November 1933 in a season that saw Third Lanark relegated to Division 2. The Hi Hi re-appeared in senior league football immediately and proceeded to dump Ayr twice, 3-1 at Somerset Park on 30th November 1935 and by 6-4 in Glasgow on 24th April 1936. It was time for aseason ‘down below’ for Ayr but on their return two draws were recorded - 1-1 at Ayr on 30th October 1937 and 2-2 at Cathkin on 26th February 1938.
It was ‘B’ division football in season 1953/54 and United suffered an embarrassing 6-0 defeat at Somerset Park on 6th February 1954 although a 2-2 draw was obtained on 21st April 1954. 4th December 1954 saw an even more disastrous 9-0 defeat for Ayr at Cathkin Park, although United had recovered to win 2-0 at home on 26th March 1955.
On 4th December 1954 Ayr United suffered one of their worst defeats, losing 9-0 at Cathkin Park. The defeat was not as heavy the following season. On 21st January 1956 United lost by a more acceptable 3-2 margin.
The 50’s were not proving to be Ayr’s best decade at Cathkin and on 5th September 1959 a A 5-0 defeat was experienced.
The new year match on 1st January 1960 saw Ayr go down 3-2.
