Goal Feast for United
Ayr United embarked on their 1973 tour of Canada with a match against a select side which went under the name of St John’s Allstars on 26th June 1973.
This first match proved to be too much for the local celebrities as Ayr ran out easy winners by 5-1 with two goals from Alex Ingram, one each from Johnny Doyle, John Graham and defender Davie Wells.
St John’s made the trip to Ayr for a end of season friendly on 30th April 1975. Ayr were already 5-0 ahead at half time and the final score of 6-0 showed a considerable amount of slackening of by the home side in the second half.
Some may have said that St John’s were gluttons for punishment because they again lined up against Ayr United on 1st July 1975 during United’s second tour of Canada. The outcome was not surprsingly a huge win for Ayr - this time by 8-1.
No programmes were produced for these matches.
