First Ever Competitive Match

Port Glasgow Athletic provided Ayr United with their first ever competitive match, a 2nd division clash at Somerset Park on 20th August 1910.

Around 2,500 watched that first league encounter. The players were not over keen to score Ayr’s first ever league goal as Charlie Phillips missed a penalty before Archie Campbell scored that historic first goal in 39 minutes. Howe scored a second in a 2-0 win.

 The return match on 1st October ended with a 1-0 defeat for United.
