1974/75 heralded Meadowbank Thistle into the Scottish League although they were formally called Ferranti Thistle, a name which had to be changed before admission to the League.
The two clubs first met in a first division match at the Commonwealth Stadium, Edinburgh on 29th October 1983 when United recorded a superb 5-1 win. By the return match on 21st January 1984 Thistle had recovered sufficiently to earn a 2-2 draw. The third of the season’s clashes was in Edinburgh and saw United draw 2-2 on 24th March 1984.
The following season United lost their first match to Meadowbank at the Commonwealth Stadium by 3-0 on 3rd November 1984 and Ayr could only manage a 1-1 draw at home on 2nd February 1985. Thistle recorded their first win at Somerset Park on 11th May 1985 by a 3-1 margin.
The teams next met in Division 2 at Somerset Park 25th October 1986 when United won by 2-0. They followed this up with a 2-2 draw at Meadowbank on 20th December 1986. The clubs met in their first ever Scottish Cup encounter on 4th February in a 3rd match at the Commonwealth Stadium which Thistle won by 2-0. Thistle were on a good run now and won by 3-1 at Ayr on 7th March 1986
Season 1988/89 saw both clubs back in Division 1 and United triumphed in Edinburgh by 2-1 on 20th August 1988. 2-2 draws were becoming normality for these two clubs and another 2-2 draw was recorded at Somerset Park on 3rd December 1988. 25th February 1989 brought a 3-2 win for Ayr at Somerset Park..
United again won at the Commonwealth Stadium again by 2-1 on 28th October 1989 but only drew 0-0 on 13th January 1990 at Ayr.
The third match ended 1-0 for Thistle at Meadowbank on 21st April 1990.
Season 1990/91 United forged out a poor 1-1 draw at Somerset Park on 8th September although they achieved a 2-0 win on 27th April 1991. In between United lost 1-0 at the Commonwealth Stadium marking a poor season for United on 12th January 1991.
Large scores were not usually part of the fair between these two, but Ayr did record a superb 7-0 victory on 21st September 1991, though they could still only manage a 1-1 draw in Edinburgh on 23rd November 1991. The large scoreline could not be repeated at Ayr on 8th February 1991 finishing as a disappointing 1-1 draw. Neverthless Ayr did record a 1-0 victory at Meadowbank on 18th April 1992.
4th August 1992 saw Meadowbank draw first blood with a 2-1 win at Somerset Park and a 1-0 for Thistle on 19th December at Meadowbank ensured no Christmas bonus for Ayr. However, United salvaged the season with two consecutive wins, 1-0 at Somerset Park on 13th February 1993 and a 2-1 away win on 1st May 1993.
These two wins were in fact the last two times that the clubs ever met as Meadowbank Thistle were relegated at the end of the season and slid into obscurity at the end of season 1994/95 rising pheonix like as Livingston the following season and moving out of the capital.
