Foxes Have The Upper Hand
Season 1973/74 saw Ayr once again start in the Scotland’s first division and once again they were entered for the Texaco Cup bagging a first round tie against Peter Shilton's Leicester City.
Unlike the previous season when Ayr had a tremendous win over Newcastle, Leicester were a much more ‘in form’ side.
Despite this Ayr produced a tremendous display in the first leg and a 1-1 draw at Somerset Park was well earned. This result gave hope and United headed for Filbert Street for the second leg.
A superb display from United was not enough and the match ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Honest Men.
Programmes were produced for both matches with Leicester City publishing a landscape design.
United also played Leicester City in a friendly match on 4th August 1988 at Somerset Park, a match which finished 4-2 for the English side.
