Early Honours to King’s Park

With King’s Park only entering the league in 1921, United didn’t play them until they were both in the second division in season 1925/26. Their first ever match against them was at Somerset Park on 24th October 1925 when the newcomers won by 2-0.

United first visited Forthbank in Stirling on 16th January 1926 when the clubs were locked on 0-0 having previously lost 2-0 at Ayr on 24th October 1925. A 5-2 victory for Ayr was recorded at Somerset Park on 9th February 1927 after drawing at Forthbank 1-1 on 25th September 1926, both in 2nd division encounters.

With Ayr in the higher division the clubs met in an epic Scottish Cup tie at Somerset Park on 9th February 1935 in the 2nd Round. A 1-1 draw was recorded and the clubs trooped off to Forthbank for a replay on 13th February 1935. This time a 2-2 draw was obtained after extra time. The second replay was at Firhill Park on 18th February 1935 and again the match was drawn, this time by 4-4 after extra time. A third replay was required to be played the following day 19th February when United lost the epic cup tie reply by 2-1.

In a high scoring season for Ayr, United recorded a 6-2 win at King’s Park on 5th December 1936 and sealed a winning season with a 5-0 at Somerset Park on 27th March 1937.
