Ayr United found themselves taking the long road to Inverness for a Scottish Cup tie on 5th February 1955. Although in the ‘B’ division Ayr were expected to win against non-league opposition which came in the form of Inverness Caledonian. However, the Highland League side had other ideas and United had to be content with a 1-1 draw and bring the highland league side back to Ayr for a replay on 9th February.
The replay ended in a draw and went to extra time with Inverness taking sensationally the honours by 4-2. It wasn’t the first time that Ayr had been left to contemplate a disastrous Cup defeat against lesser opposition.
Programmes were produced for both games.
United ventured to that part of the world again in July of 1971 for a pre-season friendly and were beaten 2-1, the only plus point the good performance of Ayr ‘keeper Jim Gilmour who also saved a penalty.
