Hurlford Are First Ever Opposition
Ayr United selected local Ayrshire neighbours, Hurlford United, to be their very first ever opposition as Ayr United on 17th August 1910 in a friendly match at Somerset Park.
Ayr United’s team for that very first match was:
Hutcheon (Albion Rovers), McKenzie (Ayr FC), Shearer (Belfast Celtic), Morrison (Ayr FC), Tickle (Ayr Parkhouse), McLaughlin (Kilwinning Rangers), Black (Ayr Parkhouse), Graham (Ayr FC), Howe (Ayr Parkhouse), Phillips (West Ham United), Campbell (Ayr FC).
Ayr began their history in style with a 4-1 win, Charlie Howe scoring the first ever hat trick by an Ayr United player and Sam Graham getting the fourth.
Hurlford’s revenge was only the length of a season away as they won an exciting Ayrshire Cup Final by 3-2 at Beresford Park, Ayr on 22nd April 1911.
Ayr United and Hurlford met again on 28th September 1912 in the 2nd round of the Scottish Qualifying Cup duty and the match ended in a 3-3 draw at Blair Park, Hurlford. When the sides met again at Somerset Park for the replay United made sure of the tie by 4-2.
