Stiff Opposition at Hamilton
Victories at Douglas Park, Hamilton have not always been easy run of the mill events. Early results provided the home team with victories and a fair sprinkling of draws made up most of the rest.
The first ever match at Hamilton was on 13th September 1913 when United suffered a 4-0 defeat. It wasn't until 4th February 1916 that a 3-2 result gave Ayr their first win at Douglas Park. This was followed closely b a 3-0 win there on 5th January 1918.
There were few further wins before the war for United. Season 1950/51 saw Ayr’s first post war win when United won 3-2 on 14th April 1951.
A high scoring match was on 29th March 1958 when United won by 5-4.
On 1st September 1962 a 3-2 win for Ayr in a League Cup sectional tie was not enough to see United go through. Bert McCubbin equalised for Ayr in 54 minutes and Sam McMillan (75) and Willie McIntyre (81) turned the match in Ayr’s favour.
Ayr United achieved a win on 7th December 1963 in a 2nd division match ending in a 4-2 win for Ayr.
United had a few good wins later in the 60’s but few matches took place in the 70’s
Sam NcNaughton scored his first goal for Ayr at Somerset Park on 18th September 1982 for a first division match in a 1-1 draw.
Season 1984/85 brought another good 4-1 victory for Ayr at Douglas Park with the programme for this match being an unusual open book cover design in a landscape format. The landscape format is a feature of Hamilton’s home programmes during this era.
On 22nd October 1994 Ayr had another win, this time by 2-0, the match, however, played at Firhill Park, Glasgow.

In recent times matches at Hamilton have been due to cup matches as the two clubs existed in different leagues for most of this time.
On 14th August 2007 the clubs met at Hamilton in a Challenge Cup match and went ahead after 17 minutes. Second half goals from Ryan Stevenson and Michael Moore gave Ayr their first victory of the season and sent United into round two of the Cup.
