Bobby Rough Debut Seals Shaymen Fate
Halifax Town were the visitors to Somerset Park on 3rd August 1968 in a pre-season friendly. The Ayr team for the day was Stewart, Malone, Murphy, McAnespie, Qiunn, Walker, Ferguson, Wilkie, Clark, McCulloch and Rough.
Davie McCulloch and Bobby Rough, having a sensational debut for Ayr, were the goalscorers for the home side in this 2-2 draw.
Manager Ally McLeod described the draw as ‘knocking off the rough edges’ off United’s play it gave them ‘a chance to experience what it is like to play against a team committed to defence in depth’.
Always gifted with a golden tongue, Ally’s comments may of disguised a criticism of the English clubs defensive tactics.
