Good Pickings at Cappielow

Ayr United’s first visit to Cappilow Park, Greenock, home of Morton was on 17th January 1914 losing 2-1. A 3-0 defeat in the following season completed a bad start to their visits to Greenock. However, United did manage to record their first win there on 15th January 1916, by 1-0. A series of draws was broken by a 4-0 defeat in November 1923. Both clubs had been relegated to the 2nd Division by the time the clubs met on 15th October 1927 when Ayr recorded a superb 2-0 win. 13th April 1930 saw United coming out best in a 7 goal thriller although it was some years before they recorded another win. In ti time they had to endure a 7-3 defeat in a first division match on 25th September 1937.

Ayr United and Morton had a history of meeting on New Years day and United recorded a 3-0 win on 1st January 1972. On the same day in 1974 Ayr had another 1st division win, this time by a slender 2-1.

Season 1991/92 saw a 4-3 win for Ayr in a 1st division match. Ayr had two 1-0 wins in the two matches at Cappielow Park on 20th November 1993 and 16th April 1994.

In season 2005/06 began well for Ayr visiting Cappiellow on 9th August 2005 and coming away with a 2-1 win in a Scottish League Cup match. A 2nd division league defeat in October was followed by a superb 4-0 league win on 25th March 2006. United once again started season 2006/07 well gaining a 2nd division draw on 19th August 2006.
