Goals Galore Against Girvan
Girvan FC encountered Ayr United for the first time on 28th February 1911 at Somerset Park in a Scottish Consolation Cup 2nd round. Ayr United showed their overwhelming superiority with a 7-1 victory.
The clubs met again on 15th April 1911 in an Ayrshire Cup semi-final in Ayr United’s first visit to Hamilton Park, Girvan. Ayr United recorded a 4-0 win.
The clubs met again on 6th April 1912 at Somerset Park and United recorded a 7-0 victory in an Ayrshire Cup semi-final.
The following season Ayr made short work of Girvan in the Scottish Qualifying Cup 3rd round winning by 3-0 at Somerset Park on 12th October 1912.
By the turn of the century the short journey down the Ayrshire Coast from Girvan to Ayr had become a world apart in terms of distance in footballing terms.
Girvan faced the modern might of Ayr United by re-entering the Ayrshire Cup competition in the 1990’s. On 30th August 1992 the teams lined up at Girvan's tiny Hamilton Park and Girvan faced an onslaught as United showed no mercy, running out 6-0 winners to go into the Ayrshire Cup Final.
Two years later, on 9th November 1994, the teams met at Ayr in the cup semi-final - different venue, same score - 6-0 for Ayr.
Some respite was had for Girvan in a friendly on 24th July 1995 at Hamilton Park when they lost 2-1 to Ayr.
23rd April 1997 and Girvan were searching for Ayrshire Cup glory yet again, this time failing by 7-0 to Ayr at Somerset Park.
Hamilton Park was the venue on 15th July 2002 when two Kean goals and one from McVeigh saw United record another win, this time by 3-0.
Girvan joined the junior ranks for the 2004/05 season and celebrated their ‘promotion’ with a pre-season friendly against Ayr on 28th July 2004. The Honest Men were in no mood for joining the celebrations thrashing Girvan by 4-1
