Redheugh Park win for Ayr

Ayr United were having a dismal season when they headed for Gateshead for a friendly on 24th February 1961. Gateshead had failed to gain re-election to the football league the previous season and so both clubs were looking for a pick me up.

A 4 page programme was produced by Gateshead in a game which Ayr won by 3-2. The programme did mention that Newcastle were showing interest in Ayr's Jim McGhee and a figure of £16,000 being quoted.
