It was some 9 years before the clubs met again in Angus and then United recorded a superb 5-0 on new years day 1937
Due to division changes, and the second world war, the clubs had yet another long period when the were not involved with each other on league duty. Then the Loons had three straight B Division wins beginning in season 49/50 when they won 5-1, then by a more slender 3-2 the following season and they finished the trio of with a 2-1 win during season 1951/52.
The Honest Men turned the tables in season 1952/53 with a sedate 2-1 victory and followed this up with a 1-0 the following season. The Loons had the edge in high scoring wins confirmed by their 6-1 win in B Division clash in another January match – this time on 8th January 1955, however they were not to win again until season 1963/64. In the meantime Ayr had secured a 3-0 win during season 1955/56, a 1-1 draw in season 1957/58 and a 2-1 win in season 1958/59.
The clubs competed in the same division on only five seasons in the 1960’s with United being in the higher divisions. A delightful 6-2 victory for Ayr on 22nd December 1962 began the series. Seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65 saw draws and a Forfar win with United thumping the Station Park men twice in 1965, once by 3-1 in the League Cup and then by 4-1 in a 2nd Division match on 2nd October 1965.
After Ayr had lost a skirmish with the First division the clubs met in 1967/68 again with Forfar winning by 2-1 but Ayr ended the sequence of matches in the 60’s with a 1-0 win the following season.
It was fifteen year before Ayr made the journey to Angus again, the intervening seasons were due to the clubs competing in different divisions. By the time they met again on 9th February 1985 both clubs were playing first division football in a restructured league and that the league set up had changed with clubs playing three times each season. Ayr won this first match at Station Park by a heavy 5-0 margin with the second ending in a 2-1 defeat for the Honest Men.
Roles were reversed the following season and only one trip was made north by United resulting in a 1-0 defeat.
The next time the clubs met was in 1988/89 and United’s two visits produced a draw and a 2-1 win which was recorded on 31st December 1988. In season 1991/92 Ayr United produced a satisfying double against Forfar, winning 3-2 on 10th August 1991 and 1-0 on 26th November 1991.
There have only been seven matches at Station Park since this time reflecting once again that the clubs have competed in different divisions with Ayr being in the higher leagues for most of this time. There was a long spell between 30th March 1996 and a 3-1 defeat for Ayr .
Success was never far away for Ayr however, and 13th August 2005 saw another 2-1 win although there was defeat for United in the second match.
3rd September 2005 saw an early 1-0 win for United at Station Road through a Millar goal. They followed this up with a 5-0 win at Somerset Park on 28th October 2006 through goals from Stevenson (35), Roberston (39), Vareille (53), Wardlaw (56) and Strain (61). 13th January saw a 0-0 draw but United wound up a good season with a 3-1 home win on 10th March 2006.
The teams met on 4th September 2007 in a Challenge Cup 1st round match when on-form striker Alex Williams latched on to a Michael Moore flick in the box and fired home to put United in control against the Third Division strugglers. Ryan Stevenson struck early in the second half making it five goals from five when he thundered a drive into the roof of the net from the edge of the box to seal Ayr’s passage into the quarter-finals.
