Friendly Win At Boroughbriggs - Then Scottish Cup Blushes
Ayr United's first visit to Boroughbriggs, Elgin was in an end of season friendly match on 28th April 1949 - the fourth match in five days that United had played in an ardous tour of the Highlands. Nevertheless Ayr recording a superb 3-0 win.
At the time Elgin City were not a Scottish League club, entering the league in season 2000/2001.
In between those two events United visited Elgin City in a Scottish Cup 1st Round tie on the evening of 1st February 1967. The match had been postponed from the previous Saturday. United were having a dismal season back in the first division and it is was almost inevitable that a shock result was on the cards. The non-league side duly delivered and recorded a devastating 2-0 defeat on Ayr. United’s shame was heightened by their stalwart defender, Dick Malone, having been sent off.
Ayr's next visited to Boroughbriggs came in a pre-season British Oxygen Cup match which Ayr won 1-0 on 28th July 1979.
No programmes for any of these matches has been produced.
To date the clubs have not met in Scottish league business.
