Terror at Tannadice
Victories against Dundee United at tannadice are hard to come by and Ayr United had to go back to the late 1950’s for a good victory at Tannadice Park when they won 5-2 in a Scottish League Cup match on 14th August 1954. Ayr had a similarly good win, by 4-3, on 7th September 1957 in a division 2 match.
Their next victory, however, was on 2nd April 1977 by 1-0, ironically in the newly formed Premier League. Success their has been scant since with the odd draw, mainly in cup competitions.
The most notable was during season 2001/2002 when Ayr’s 2-2 draw at Tannadice in front of over 5,800 fans in the 5th round of the Scottish Cup gave the Honest Men a home replay which Ayr won 2-0.
The superb display over the two matches took Ayr to a semi-final tie against Celtic at Hampden in May, a match played only a week after Ayr’s first ever cup final at Hampden in the CIS insurance cup.
