Beith Bring the First Ever Extra Time Match
The first ever match between the two clubs was in Ayr United’s first season as a club. The Scottish Consolation Cup 3rd round match played on 4th February 1911 ended in a 2-0 win for Ayr.
The clubs met again the same season but this time in an Ayrshire Cup 2nd round match at Ayr’s Somerset Park on 25th February 1911 ending in a 1-1 draw. The reply at Beith’s Glebe Park also finished 1-1 on 11th March 1911. The marathon tie resumed on 25th March 1911 at Beresford Park, Ayr and United finally clinched it 3-1, but only after extra time - the first ever extra time match involving Ayr United.
Astonishingly the two clubs were drawn together in the Scottish Qualifying Cup 4th Round the following season, however, Ayr United made no mistake at Glebe Park on 14th October 1911 although the slim 1-0 win ensured a nail biting finish to the match.
The marathon matches between these two continued into season 1912/13 when they met at Glebe Park on 19th April 1913 in an Ayrshire Cup semi-final match which ended in a 1-1 draw. The tie was thankfully settled in the first replay at Somerset Park with the Honest Men winning by 3-0.
Ayr United travelled to North Ayrshire for a friendly match against Beith on 4th October 1992 to participate in a testimonial match for Beith player Les Train.
