Yorkshire Men Win At Somerset Park
Barnsley were the newly crowned champions of the English Third divsion (north), when they travelled north to Somerset Park on 26th April 1939. The match was, not only a benefit match for Ayr United's Jock Taylor who became a free agent after the match, but it was also a culmination of a transfer deal.
Ayr United’s John Steele had joined Barnsley in the summer of 1938, (playing for them until 1946). At the conclusion of the transfer deal the two clubs agreed to play each other.
