Ashington Return The favour
Some 13 years after Ayr went to Ashington in the North East of England to play Newcastle to raise funds for th YMCA, non-league Ashington themselves came to play Ayr at Somerset park on 18th April 1964. The Newcasle connections did not end there. Ashington, of course, was the home of the legendary Jackie Milburn and Ashington themselves trooped onto Somerset park kitted out in a Newcastle United strip.
Ayr may have been forgiven for thinking that they were playing the famous Geordie club being 2-0 down at half time. However a second half goal from Frew and two from Kilgannon ensured a a 3-2 win for Ayr.
No programme was produced for the match.
