Once again the pe-season expectations of Ayr United success took a dent in an early exit from the Lower Divisions Cup by a club froma division lower than that of Ayr. This time East Stirlingshire did the damage.
Nevertheless United began the league season well and went to the top of the league by mid-August with ace striker Bryan Prunty taking the honours. Good results continued into August and despite a home draw with Brechin United still kept top spot into mid- September from Peterhead.
Seasons Programme
The programme for season 2008/09 was designed to be a celebration of 120 years at Somerset park ahead of United’s planned move to a new stadium. The classy black cover was only broken by a black and white picture from the archives. Inside the 26 page programme was the managers comments followed by two pages of Somerset Heroes, Somerset Memories. The days’ teams preceeded ‘On This Day’ black and white pictures from recent matches and a page on the clubs youth acadamy.
The middle pages had the players pictures and sponsors followed by the seasons statistics. There was a quiz and a then a few pages on community issues. The remaining pages were taken up by adverts. Nevertheless the programme was packed with interesting articles. Excellent programme particularly for the historian.
