8th position was Ayr’s reward for a hard fought First Division campaign and Scottish Cup quarter final place. 

Pride of place in results terms was the superb 3-0 win at Ibrox against Rangers which was only United’s second ever win away to Rangers. Ayr United legend Sam McMillan had the audacity to sit on the ball during that match at Ibrox goading the home players to take the ball from him.

Three weeks later he scored twice as Ayr defeated Celtic 3-2 at Parkhead – the only occasion that the club have done the ‘away’ double over the Old Firm.
