Early ‘organised’ football matches for this season were nullified after the outbreak of the Second World War.
‘Unofficial’ football continued but in 1940, Ayr United ‘s Board of Directors decided that the club should close down for the duration of the war – although wartime fixtures involving players from the forces were occasionally played at Somerset Park
Sadly this meant that manager Frank Thompson also had to leave the club.
The ‘unofficial’ season was significant for Ayr United winning the Scottish 2nd eleven Cup where first team players used throughout the competition by all sides.
