1 point separated the seven teams between 13th and 19th place, Dundee being the unlucky side in the relegation slot.
Ayr finished in 17th place ahead of rivals Kilmarnock.
It was also a season of Scottish Cup replays with no less than three rounds being settled by a replay. Queens Park and Morton had already been dispatched in that way when Ayr met Kilmarnock in the quarter final. With strong winds blowing down Rugby Park this became a game of two halves. A Thompson 25 yarder on 30 minutes put Killie 1-0 ahead at half time. A wind assisted equaliser came in 51 minutes from a Taylor 30 yarder
The replay at Somerset Park was a devastating defeat for Ayr. The 5-0 score in front of 23,785 could have been much bigger if not for stout Ayr defending.
However Ayr could have been level at half time after McAvoy’s opener in 20 minutes. Ayr’s Currie however missed a crucial penalty. Killie’s Thompson scored twice from penalty’s in the second half with Collins and McGrogen completing the rout.
