Ayr United bounced back from the previous season’s disappointment with an emphatic 2nd division championship winning performance with the help of another of Ayr’s goalscoring legends - Terry McGibbon
Winning the championship aside, United created a number of records during the season. High scoring matches were common this season and record number one was that Ayr scored eight goals at home on three occasions in the season, the first time ever that they had done this. These wins were 8-1 over Brechin City in October, 8-3 win over Stenhousemuir in November and 8-1 win over Montrose on Boxing day.
Record number 2 was twelve league victories in a row starting with a 4-0 win over Alloa on 24th October and finishing with that 7-2 over East Stirling on 2nd January, the day after a 5-0 win over Forfar Athletic. Ayr scored 64 times on this run.
Record number 3 was an unbeaten home campaign with season ticket holders witnessing seventeen matches undefeated.
Record number 4 was the scoring of 122 league goals, beating the previous record of 117 scored in season 1927/28. ‘Terrier’ McGibbon had the honour of scoring the 118th goal in a 5-0 thrashing of King’s Park on 27th March 1937. McGibbon had another disctinction that season as he also scored Ayr’s 50th league goal, which turned out also to be his own 25th of the season.
