Manager Alex Gibson struggled to maintain Ayr United's First Division status by Christmas 1934. Such defeats as an 8-1 loss away to Falkirk in October and a 7-0 defeat by celtic in November had dented confidence.
Ayr had a disastrous 7-1 defeat at Queens’ Palmerston Park on 1st January despite being on top for the first 30 minutes, typical of a disastrous season. A few days later first division survival began to look extremely fragile after an 8-0 defeat away to Albion Rovers.
The manager resigned on the following Monday.
Frank Thompson took over and United began to pick up points. After a bad 7-0 loss to Aberdeen in February Ayr had a successful March which included a 1-0 victory over Celtic, part of a six match unbeaten run which also included three wins where United scored three goals.
With this run Thompson managed to salvage an 18th position, a mere two points away from relegation escaping on the last day of the season despite a 3-2 defeat by Airdrie.
