Ayr United celebrated their 10th consecutive season in the First Division with a 14th place finish—the fifth season in a row that they finished either 10th or 14th place. They also had a new manager in Jimmy Richardson.
Their 14th finish this season, left them only a few points above relegation.
Ayr had been tipped as Cup winners and pulses raced when Ayr were drawn against rivals Kilmarnock when another record crowd was recorded at Somerset Park. 16,721 people paid to witness some early Killie pressure. However United went on to win 1-0 with an 85th minute goal from Harry ‘Peerie’ Cunningham.
This Scottish Cup win gave Ayr a match against Clydebank in the 3rd round which was won by 3-2. In the 4th round Ayr were paired with Lankashire club Airdrieonians. A four match cup marathon against ensued, with the Lanarkshire club finally winning, going on to win the Cup.
